Associate Pastor Job Description

Position Purpose:

  1. To plan and implement all aspects of a ministry with children and youth focused on attracting and raising the next generation of spiritual/moral leaders.  - (60-70% of the role)
    Attracting families with children and youth is one of the Church’s primary objectives and has the full support of the Church leadership and congregation. The decision to hire an Associate Pastor is intended to provide leadership to our children and youth programs.
    At the core of this will be the creation of an innovative and groundbreaking program for the development of moral and spiritual leadership for children and youth.   

  2. To preach/participate in the weekly worship service, which will also include opportunities to preach to the congregation (a minimum of once a month) – (20% of the role)

  3. To provide pastoral care and outreach support (shared with the Senior Minister – (20% of the role)

Specific Duties:

1. Reports to Senior Pastor. Directly supervises the Children’s Ministries Director and staff.

2. Plan and implement all aspects of a ministry with children and youth, focusing on attracting and raising the next generation of spiritual and moral leaders.

  • Oversee the Children’s Ministries program (for children, nursery through fifth grade) in coordination with the Christian Education Committee. The Children’s Ministries is founded on the belief that children are innately and joyfully spiritual. Our program is designed to cultivate children making friends and having fun while learning Bible stories and Christian values through creative activities.

3. Provide leadership of programs for children from Nursery through High School , with an initial focus on grades 4 to 6, in order to  increase the spirituality of children and youth and inspire their families to be active participants in the Church.

  • Develop youth groups for middle and high school students that includes faith-based and service activities.

  • Develop relationships and partnerships with local preschools, elementary and other community-based organizations seeking the spiritual health of children.

  • Be an advocate for youth and educate the congregation about the hopes, concerns and needs of youth in the local church.

  • Research and participate in work with the Faith in Action Committee to lead opportunities for children/youth to participate in Church outreach activities.

  • Communicate regularly with parents, using e-mail and phone, as well as the use of our church’s website, podcasts and all social media platforms.

4. Assist in worship leadership responsibilities:

  • In collaboration with fellow clergy, the Worship Committee and the Board of Trustees, select each year’s major themes to be explored in the monthly worship services.

  • Deliver regular Children’s Message and preach to the congregation a minimum of once a month.

  • Assist with seasonal services: Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and others.

  • Assist in organizing and implementing child-inclusive worship services that both attract young families and incorporate children in active engagement.

  • With the Christian Education Committee organize special services including the Christmas Pageant.

5. Work with the Faith in Action Committee:

  • Maintain and expand service outreach programs, including the EcoAction Team, Midnight Run, Couples’ Group, and the Afghan Evacuees Resettlement Program.

Other Pastoral Duties:

  • Meets weekly with the Senior Pastor and attend weekly Church Staff meetings, as well as Christian Education Committee and Parent Group meetings.

  • Creates and monitors budgets for Christian Education including Children’s Ministries.

  • Attends meetings of the Board of Trustees and updates Trustees on the status of projects underway.

  • Manages staff with clear expectations, creates strong morale and good working relationships.

  • Assist Senior Pastor in communications with congregation members, including creative use of our Digital Ministry Programs.

Successful candidates will have a Bachelor's degree or Master of Divinity degree and at least 2-3 years prior relevant work experience.
